Sciatica Treatment Palm Beach
Sciatica has a way of making everyday things suddenly hard. Sitting for more than ten minutes hurts. Driving feels impossible. Putting on your shoes becomes a strategic exercise. The pain can be sharp, electric, burning, or just a constant ache down the back of your leg.
What is sciatica?
Sciatica is what we call pain that travels along the sciatic nerve — the longest nerve in the body — usually starting in the lower back or buttock and running down into the leg. It's not actually a diagnosis on its own; it's a symptom that points to something irritating the nerve roots in the lower spine.
Common causes include disc bulges or herniations putting pressure on the nerve, joint dysfunction in the lower back or pelvis, tight muscles (especially the piriformis) compressing the nerve as it passes through the buttock, or facet joint irritation. Each cause needs a different approach.
How chiropractic care can help
First, we work out what's actually causing your sciatica. We do a thorough examination, including neurological tests (reflexes, sensation, strength) and orthopaedic tests to identify the source. We may recommend X-rays from South Coast Radiology next door — sometimes imaging is necessary to plan care properly, especially for stubborn or severe cases.
Treatment depends on what's causing your sciatica. Specific adjustments to the lumbar spine and pelvis to restore movement, soft tissue work on the piriformis and surrounding muscles, gentle traction techniques where appropriate, and rehabilitation exercises to take pressure off the nerve. We focus on calming the irritation first, then addressing the underlying mechanics.
