Strains & Sprains
Tweaked your back lifting something. Rolled your ankle on the beach. Pulled a muscle at training. Strains and sprains are everyday injuries — but the way you manage them in the first 48 hours and the weeks after can make a big difference to how well they heal.
What are strains and sprains?
A strain is a muscle or tendon injury — usually from overstretch or sudden force. A sprain is a ligament injury — same idea, different tissue. Both involve some degree of tearing of the fibres, inflammation, and protective muscle guarding.
We commonly see lower back strains, neck strains, hamstring and calf strains, ankle sprains, knee sprains (medial collateral, anterior cruciate-related), wrist and finger sprains. The grade ranges from mild (a few fibres) through to complete (full tear), with most cases sitting in the mild-to-moderate range.
How chiropractic care can help
We assess the severity, identify which tissues are involved, and rule out anything more serious that needs different management. Acute strains and sprains need careful early management — appropriate rest, ice, compression, elevation in the first phase, then gradual reintroduction of movement and load.
Once the acute phase has settled, treatment can include joint mobilisation and adjustment, soft tissue work, dry needling, taping, and progressive rehabilitation exercises. The goal is to restore full movement, strength and confidence so you can return to your activities — and reduce the chance of it happening again.
